Advisors – Frequently Asked Questions

Registering MASC Appointed Staff or Regional Executive Board members for a Conference:

ONLY AUTHORIZED SCHOOL ADVISORS or a school administrator may register a student to attend a MASC conference.  MASC has three major comferences each year – Fall Leadership Conference (November), Legislative Session (February), and Convention (March).   School must be a member of MASC to attend the Legislative Session and the Convention (membership link).

MASC appointed staff members are voting members of the MASC executive board.  When you are registering them for MASC conferences, they would be registered as ” MASC ExBd.”  The MASC executive directors register the four elected MASC officers.

For determining the number of voting delegates from your school, MASC ExBd members are in addition to the votes allowed according to your membership in MASC. (membership link).  For example, if your school is allotted seven voting delegates and you have two students serving on the executive board (regional president, regional SMOB, regional 2nd vice president, or MASC appointed staff), they would be additional votes – so, the school could send a full delegation of seven students plus the two additional MASC executive board students – registered as ExBd.

For two conferences, the Fall Leadership Conference and the Legislative Session, some students will be chosen to be workshop presenters.  In that case, as there is a reduced registration fee, the selected students would be registered as a “presenter.”  A list of selected workshop presenters will be emailed to you before registration opens so you are aware.  In registering a presenter, you would select “presenter” as the role.  If the presenter is also a voting delegate, in the comments section, just list the student(s) name and state that this student is also a voting delegate.

For the convention, students wishing to write/facilitate a workshop must have advisor approval before they apply.  This allows the school advisor to have some control over who is able to attend the convention as you only have a limited number of spots (again – according to your membership – ExBd members would still be additional numbers).  As MASC is an organization of school student councils, we are trying to make sure that you, the school advisor, have the final say in who from your school attends the convention.  (This is not an issue for the other two conferences as you can always bring additional students.)

In addition, the MASC registrar posts a detailed checklist on each conference website that will also guide you in the registration process.

Conference Workshops:

For the Fall Leadership Conference and the Convention, a list of prepared workshops will be available for students to select up to five workshop choices.  Once registration closes, students will be assigned to specific workshops based on their preferences and availability.

For the Legislative Session, advisors will need to know if a student has attended Legislative Session in the past.  There is a strand of workshops for new participants and a different strand of workshops for students who have attended this conference in the past.

Registering for a town hall, webinar, forum, executive board meeting, etc.

Interested students may register themselves for other MASC events.  These other registrations are done through Google forms.  For in-person events, parents would sign-off for an emergency/release form, provide transportation, and cover costs for food/materials if required.

Note:  During the pandemic, for virtual conferences, some of the above conference workshop information may be adjusted – i.e. students might just choose the workshop the day of the event.
