The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) has opened nominations for student members of the NASSP Student Leadership Advisory Committee.    The committee term is from mid – November 2019 to October 30, 2021.

About the NASSP Student Leadership Advisory Committee

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) formed a Student Leadership Advisory Committee to ensure that NASSP provides programs, services, and resources which promote student leadership, voice, service, and engagement align with NASSP mission and vision.  Membership on this committee includes students, advisers, and principals from schools with National Student Council (NatStuCo), National Honor Society, National Junior Society, and National Elementary Honor Society.

Duties and Obligations

a. To be knowledgeable of all NASSP student programs and services.
b. Provide periodic review and recommend revisions or enhancements for all Student Program programs, services, and initiatives.
c. Identify student-related issues, topics, and concerns and provide advice and recommendations for NASSP Student Programs Department action, input, or response.
d. Serve as a focus group for the marketing and sales departments to discuss current marketing ideas and review new product ideas as needed.
e. Provide written and digital submission to ADVISE and social media platforms.
f. Represent NASSP Student Programs at special events and meetings as assigned by NASSP staff.

Meeting Requirements

a. The NASSP Student Leadership Advisory Committee will meet once in person during the academic year. Travel/hotel accommodations will be covered by NASSP.
b. The NASSP Student Leadership Advisory Committee will meet virtually, periodically throughout the academic year.

Committee Makeup – The Student Leadership Advisory Committee will be composed of state associations nominees for students on the committee. The committee makeup is as follows:

6 high school student members (3 NHS, 3 NatStuCo member schools)
2 middle-level student members (1 representing the school of the middle-level adviser-at-large and 1 from the NJHS principal-at-large)
2 high school advisers-at-large (1 NHS, 1 NatStuCo member school)
1 middle-level adviser-at-large (1 NJHS or 1 middle-level NatStuCo member school)
3 practicing principals-at-large (NASSP members: 1 NHS school, 1 NJHS school, 1 NatStuCo school)

State Nomination – Each state association may nominate one high school student. The student nominees must be from schools with current National Student Council, National Honor Society or National Junior Honor Society affiliation.

Students applying through MASC must submit a letter of intent on or before 5:00 p.m., September 29th, as a formal application from NASSP is due by October 8, 2019.  In your letter of intent, please include the following:

• Full name (first and last)
• Email address
• School
• Full School address
• Grade in school (currently enrolled in grade 10 or 11 for the high school student member seat)
middle school students must apply with their advisor or principal (see committee make-up above)
• School affiliation (National Student Council or National Honor Society)
In addition, please address the following points in a brief paragraph (no more than 200 words per bulleted point)
• your ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
• your sense of responsibility and accountability
• your commitment to school and/or community organizations
• how you have demonstrated interest and engagement in volunteerism and service
• your strong commitment to students making meaningful change

All committee members will be selected by the NASSP Programs and Services staff and subject to the approval of the NASSP Board of Directors in November 2019.
